The notion of Silent Hill returning to it’s former glory is more horrifying than what the trailer showcases…surprisingly
Game series come and go, popularity waxes and wanes with the times, and what was popular yesterday is forgotten tomorrow. This cold hard reality that is the song and dance of the everyday in gaming spells gloom and doom for even larger game developers and publishers, and is a frightening truth everyone in the industry must confront on a regular basis.
Not a good sign when one of the scariest things that’s come out from your video game survival horror series in years is a pachinko machine…
Let it not be said then that the Silent Hill community, maybe more so than most others, is well acquainted with this grim realism with abundant clarity, as they have waited year in year out for their favorite survival horror series to reclaim the mantle of cock of the walk as the scariest place on the gaming block. Sadly, at one point in the series stories history, the last major event of any worth within the annals of Silent Hill fame was merely a demo, also known as P.T., or playable teaser, which came and went more than a decade ago. For a long time after, fans languished in purgatory, awaiting the next worthwhile trip down a gruesomely littered and dimly lit memory lane representing their favorite old haunt.
For some, P.T. also standing for “pissing terrifingly”, if the pants wetting reactions were anything to go by
Things finally come to a front in the form of the Silent Hill 2 remake, which made waves last year, against an onslaught of scrutiny and skepticism, and rightfully so. With the entire pedigree in dire stakes for such a lengthy period of time, why would anyone have faith in Konami to finally put out a decent send-up worthy of the legacy of one of the greatest survival horror series of all time? The gravity of the situation resting on the metaphorical shoulders of a deeply flawed man.
Just ask James: sometimes, doing the bad thing feels good, and SH fans would tend to agree
Despite all odds, the SH2 remake was met with overwhelmingly positive praise, fans happy to see the limelight shine favorably on their favorite kind of visceral once again. Setting the stage for an original follow up, people have been clamoring for another brand new Silent Hill experience since then, and Konami looks to have finally delivered with the reveal of a new game entitled Silent Hill f, and the trailer is hitting all of the right notes.
A strange moment of paradoxical joy when the slight hint of fog puts everything into clear perspective
Looking to take a more eastern approach, in refocusing the series on strengthening and building upon a much stronger Japanese identity than games in the recent past, Silent Hill f is something of a period piece, being set in the 1960’s, following a school student named Hinako, as she does battles with demons, both seen and unseen, as the series brings back into focus both the psychological aspects of horror, as well as the moody atmosphere Silent Hill has built a reputation upon.
Scare me, senpai
I was justifiably rolling my eyes before the new trailer began, and with all of that said, I did a complete 180 when I realized the series may finally be back on the right track. Take a look for yourself below..
